Hello my dear wife I have missed you dearly and I wish I could be with you right now but I’m afraid that I can’t. I have written this letter to tell you that I have just finished my Domesday Book. I think that it might just be better than my creation of the tower of London. Il tell you a little bit about the book. My Domesday Book is an insight into our life and times of this era. My survey allows the Normans and to administer England and levy taxes. I ordered my Norman survey of all the lands and possessions of England in order to assist with the Norman administration of England and impose relevant taxes. My book also ensures that all landholders and tenants swore allegiance to me. The report shows the wealth of our country, it also shows the suffering it had passed through in the rebellions against me. Since then I always keep the book with me, in order "that I might be able to see at any time of how much more wool the English flock would bear fleecing." The object of the Domesday Book is not to extort money. It is suppose to present a full and exact report of the financial and military resources of my kingdom which might come in handy as my defense.
